<image:caption>While wandering through overgrown sections of Richmond/Henrico County, Virginia's East End Cemetery, I found the grave of an African American veteran, Charles Watkins, beneath a bonnet of ivy. Just yards away, Erin and other volunteers were finding long-obscured graves beneath vines and leaves and brambles—Glenn Nelson Jones, June Anderson, and others. Volunteer coordinator John Shuck estimates that the East End cleanup effort has revealed over 800 graves—and that they've beat back the forest from 15 percent of what was once one of Richmond's most prominent burial grounds for black folk. This means that there are likely thousands more graves waiting to be stumbled over and upon.</image:caption>

<image:title>Video - Uncovering Headstones of Ryland and Sarah Lewis at East End</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a series of still photos of Erin and Justin clearing English ivy and vines from the headstone of Ryland and Sarah Lewis at East End Cemetery. Ryland was a "head waiter," according to his death certificate. He died at 57. Sarah, listed as a "domestic" on her death certificate, passed away twelve years after Ryland, at age 64. Their plot is one among thousands at the abandoned African American cemetery in Henrico County and the City of Richmond that volunteers are reclaiming from nature. Slowly, but surely.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects</image:title>
<image:caption>We made our first trip to East End, a historic African American cemetery in Henrico County and the City of Richmond, more than a year ago, in May 2014, though we didn’t know it at the time. We were on our way to Evergreen Cemetery, East End's better-known neighbor, where famous black Richmonders Maggie Walker and John Mitchell Jr. are buried. Driving slowly down the access road past what looked like forest, even jungle, we spotted bits of white and gray—corners, tops, and edges of funerary monuments. We assumed that these were Evergreen graves and had no idea that we were catching glimpses of a different overgrown cemetery, a sixteen-acre burial ground with a parallel story. Much of what is now East End was originally chartered as Greenwood Cemetery in 1892 by an association of prominent African Americans. After defaulting, they sold the property back to its original owners for five dollars. A new group of leading lights took over in 1897, when it became East End. Other back-and-forths followed. No arrangements for perpetual care were ever made, so when the community that supported the cemetery began to disperse under the weight of many forces—the attack on African American civil rights and economic power in the wake of Reconstruction; the physical destruction of Jackson Ward; the demise of de jure segregation, which opened burial grounds in the city proper to African Americans—East End Cemetery deteriorated. As a business entity, it is again in default, according to the last member of the burial association listed in Henrico County records as its owner. Volunteers, us among them, do what they can to keep nature, vandals, and surreptitious trash dumpers at bay, but only a large, creative, and collaborative effort that involves public entities and citizens—perhaps similar to the way public funds are earmarked for Confederate monuments and cemeteries such as Oakwood—will restore East End. <image:title>Projects - You Can't Go Home Again</image:title>
<image:caption>We found this photo in Brian's father's massive (and massively disorganized) collection after he passed away in April 2011. Ed Palmer—known to his Southern kin as "Eddie," "Ed Lee," or "Eddie Lee"—stands second from left, next to his sister Ethelyn Springs and behind the headstone of his paternal grandfather, Mat(t)hew Palmer. The other headstone, we have come to believe, is that of his grandmother, Julia Fox Palmer. Ed/Eddie/Ed Lee was 15 years old in 1943 when the U.S. Navy invoked eminent domain and took his family's land—located in a patchwork of largely African American communities called Magruder—to build Camp Peary. Mat, born a slave in Amelia County, Virginia, and Julia, most likely enslaved in Gloucester County before the Civil War, had come to own that land sometime around the turn of the 20th century. They divided it up and passed it down to their 12 children, many of whom raised their own families on it. We knew little of this when we first saw the photograph. Brian had heard the name Mat Palmer, but he knew nothing about his great-grandfather. Mat died in 1927, the year before Ed was born, and it seems the family didn't talk much about the past. Ed, who spent much of his life trying to leave Virginia behind, never got over the loss of his family's land—he remained deeply bitter until his death nearly 70 years later. Camp Peary is now a top-secret military base. It is also a CIA training facility, colloquially known as the Farm. The base is closed to the public except through explicit permission from the powers that be. Camp Peary, York County, Virginia, circa 1998.</image:caption>
